Art Campus
Art route at the Johan de Witt Scholengroep
For creative makers and thinkers.
At the Johan de Witt School Group, every student has the opportunity to actively experience art and culture. Through our Art Route, students discover dance, theater, visual arts, music, and language expression. We connect arts education with identity, self-confidence, self-expression, and social reflection. We collaborate with leading cultural institutions in The Hague, such as Art-S-Cool, Haags Theaterhuis, Filmhuis Den Haag, KOO, Korzo, Kunstmuseum Den Haag, Laaktheater, National Theater, Nederlands Dans Theater, Popschool Den Haag, Residentie Orkest, and Styles Company. This allows students to experience art not only in the classroom but also in the professional environment of the city.
Arts Campus on Glasblazerslaan.
The Johan de Witt Scholengroep has its own Arts Campus on Glasblazerslaan: an inspiring place where art and culture are literally a permanent fixture within our school. On this campus, students are given the space to discover, create, and grow in dance, theater, music, visual arts, and language expression. All students in the lower grades participate in classes here in a creative learning environment, supported by professional teachers and cultural institutions from The Hague.
Art and Citizenship Education: Collaboration with AHK
Together with the research group of the Art Education Research Group at the Amsterdam University of the Arts, an innovative program has been developed in which art education is linked to current citizenship themes. In this way, students learn not only to create, but also to observe, ask questions, and give meaning.
Art in the Lower Grades
In the lower grades, Art Education (CE) is a fixed and mandatory part of the curriculum. Students are introduced to music, visual arts, theater, and dance, and develop their creative skills step by step. They learn to experiment, present, and collaborate, and discover how art can contribute to self-confidence and expression. Students are also introduced to the city's cultural offerings, for example through museum visits and attending performances.
Art in the Upper Grades:
In Years 3 and 4, students take classes at the art institutions themselves. They work in a professional environment, alongside artists and teachers from the field.
Will your painting soon be hanging in the Kunstmuseum? Will your film be showing at Filmhuis Den Haag? Or will you be on stage at the National Theatre?
Additionally, upper-level students can choose art as an elective. For example, in pre-vocational secondary education (VMBO), photography or illustration are possible. Students in pre-vocational secondary education (MAVO), senior general secondary education (HAVO), and pre-university education (VWO) can take their final exams in music, drama, dance, or visual arts.
Extracurricular Arts Activities:
Even outside of class, the Arts Campus is bustling. Students can participate in free activities such as digital music, dance, band coaching, the music talent group, and visual arts.
